Monte Vista Community Methodist Church
10:00 - 11:00 am (Mountain time)
Janet Elaine Worth Schmidt, a beloved musician and cherished member of the Homelake community, peacefully passed away on June 16, 2026, at the age of 87, after a life filled with music, love, and selflessness. Born on August 2, 1938, in Monte Vista, Colorado, Janet was the eldest of three daughters, and her deep bond with her father shaped her compassionate spirit that touched the lives of many.
In her younger years, she was a member of the Monte Vista Rifle Team, an experience that strengthened the special bond she shared with her father. Through his dedicated coaching and her unwavering determination to excel, she distinguished herself as the only female member of the team. Her hard work and talent led to remarkable success, earning her the title of Colorado State Champion for three consecutive years and National Champion for one year.
Janet earned her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder and went on to receive a Master's Degree from the University of Michigan. Her passion for music led her to a fulfilling career as an elementary music teacher in El Paso, Texas, and later as a professor at Florida State University. A talented musician, she was often seen playing as the Principal Bassoonist in various orchestras, where her artistry and dedication shone brightly. This also gave her the opportunity to travel and she was able to play in places as far away as Russia with the University of Michigan Symphony.
Those who knew Janet will remember her for her kind heart, patient demeanor, and warm smile. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to others, exemplifying selflessness and a deep love for her family and friends. She leaves behind her loving sisters, Vicki Bever of Monte Vista and Cathy (Bob) Woolley of Holdrege, Nebraska, as well as her stepchildren, Charles (Debbie) Schmidt, Debbie (Bob) Brandt, and Suzanne (Jeroen) Walhof, her nieces and nephews: John (Coleen) Bever, Kari Bever-Valdez, Thomas (Teresa) Bever, Bob (Jacke) Woolley, Jr., Mike (Deborah) Woolley, and Brian (Amanda) Woolley, and many great-nieces and nephews who will carry her spirit forward.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, John F. and Katherine Worth, her husband Harry Schmidt, her brother-in-law Jack Bever, and her step-son Roy Schmidt.
Cremation was selected and a Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday July 6, 2026 at the Monte Vista Community Methodist Church. Friends and family are invited to gather for a service that will honor her love for music and the joy she brought to others' lives. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Monte Vista Community Methodist Church or the Colorado State Veterans Center at Homelake and ear marked for activities.
Janet Elaine Schmidt will be deeply missed, but her melody will play on in the hearts of those she touched.
