Wayne Gillenwater

Eldon Wayne Gillenwater, born on February 25, 1947, in Woodward, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully of on September 20, 2025, in Monte Vista, Colorado. He was 78 years old.

Wayne proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, dedicating his time as an Air Police officer. It was during this period that he met the love of his life, whose memory he cherished even after her passing. After his service, Wayne found a fulfilling career with the United States Postal Service, where he served for 20 years and a few as the Postmaster in Creede, Colorado.

Following his retirement, Wayne relocated to Missouri, where he embraced his passion for golf and took a position in a pro shop, enjoying the game he loved. A sports enthusiast throughout his life, he was particularly fond of basketball and golf, and he had a special appreciation for sports cars, acquiring several as a way to celebrate his vibrant spirit.

He moved to Colorado State Veterans Center at Homelake in Monte Vista after his wife passed away, to be closer to his daughter. He was a truly loved resident and made many friends during his time there.

Wayne was a devoted father to his daughter Christina Gillenwater and son Eldon Wayne Gillenwater, Jr. He considered his family his greatest treasure, often expressing his love with heartfelt sincerity, saying to Christina, "I love you with all there is." He is also survived by son-in-law Gibbs Sanchez, grandchildren Josie (Austin) Sanchez, T.J. Sanchez, and great-grandchild Kylan Sanchez, and his brother Jack (Cathy) Whatley.

Wayne was preceded in death by his wife Susan Gillenwater, and his parents Harold and Opal Gillenwater

Known for his kindness, warmth, and humor, Wayne had a unique ability to light up a room with his presence. He was a gentle soul who easily made friends and was always there to offer support with his big, warm hugs.

Cremation was selected and a private family gathering will be held at a later time.

Eldon Wayne Gillenwater will be deeply missed, but his love and spirit will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
