Edward Jerome Powszukiewicz, known to many as Ed, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025 at his home in Saguache surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 7, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, to Walter and Rose Powszukiewicz.
On July 3, 1963, Ed married the love of his life, Tootsie Powszukiewicz, and together they built a family rooted in love, laughter, and service to others. Ed and Tootsie made their first home in Saguache, Colorado, until 1969 when they built a house in Villa Grove where they raised their family. In 1993, they returned to Saguache where they remained an integral part of the community.
He is survived by his devoted wife Tootsie, son Michael Powszukiewicz, and grandchildren Brenna (Andrew) Studer, Megan Carroll, Ben (Kim) Powszukiewicz, and Ashley (Dustin) Leeway. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Alex Carroll, Andi Marie Carroll, and Stephanie Powszukiewicz. Ed is lovingly remembered by his brother Walter Powers, brother-in-law Gerald Gray, Ron and Roxanne Gilbertson, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Mitzi Hunter-Young; his parents Walter and Rose Powszukiewicz; his stepfather William Long; siblings and in-laws Joe and Donna Alexander, Alma Gray, Richard Powszukiewicz, and Betty (Tom) Woodman.
Ed proudly joined the United States Army in September 1960, eventually being stationed at Fort Carson. After his service, he went on to dedicate 30 years to the Colorado Department of Transportation in Villa Grove, followed by 20 more years with Saguache County Road and Bridge, retiring fully in 2019.
A deeply committed member of his community, Ed served on numerous boards including the Mountain Valley School Board, Northern Saguache Fire Department, Booster Club, and Saguache Ambulance. He was an active member of the Pitkin Avenue Baptist Church, an Al Kaly Shriner for 30 years, and a proud Mason with the Olive Branch #32 lodge, where he served as Past Master five times and a member for 50 years.
Ed had a deep love for hunting, boating, cruising, and trips to Las Vegas. He cherished his time spent with friends and traveling companions, especially Alma and Gerald, Donna and Joe, and Ron and Roxanne. He adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, taking great joy in their company.
He will be remembered not only for his community dedication and service but also for his boundless love for his family and zest for life. A gifted athlete, Ed once pitched a no-hitter as a freshman at Gilman High School and loved playing football, basketball, and baseball throughout his school years.
Services will be held at Mountain Valley School Gymnasium, 403 Pitkin Ave, Saguache, CO, on Saturday, August 23rd at 10:00 AM, followed by graveside services and a meal. To express condolences to the family, please visit www.mvmortuary.com
