IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dora Mae
Crawford
January 24, 1939 – March 20, 2026
Dora Mae Sheesley Crawford, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026, at the age of 87. She was born on January 24, 1939, at St. Joseph Hospital in Del Norte, Colorado, to Ray and Berniece Sheesley. Growing up on a farm in the community, Dora developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for family and tradition.
A proud graduate of the Class of 1957 from Center Consolidated Schools, Dora Mae was honored as Salutatorian. She furthered her education at what is now the University of Northern Colorado before marrying the love of her life, Eugene Crawford, on April 10, 1965. Together, they welcomed three wonderful children: Denise, Don, and Scott, who brought endless joy to their lives.
Dora Mae was an active and cherished member of the Center United Methodist Church, where she served the community through teaching Sunday School, conducting summer Bible School, and participating in Martha Circle. Her dedication to public service was evident in her 34 years working in the town of Center's Clerk's Office, where she was a familiar face, particularly in utility billing.
An active member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs Colorado for over 60 years, Dora Mae even served as president, tirelessly contributing to the community she loved. Known for her baking skills, she delighted in creating beautiful cakes for birthdays and weddings, turning her passion into a small home business that brought joy to many.
After retiring, Dora Mae and Eugene fulfilled their dream of exploring new places together, traveling to 43 states, including Alaska, as well as wonderful trips to Germany and Austria, making cherished memories along the way.
Dora Mae is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eugene; her parents, Ray and Berniece; her stepfather, Lowell Stanley; her infant sister, Roberta Faye; her son-in-law, Bill Whitmer; her brother-in-law, Tom Abogast; and her adopted "sister," Dixie Belle Pierce.
She is survived by her children: Denise Crawford of Monte Vista, CO; Don (Yvette) Crawford; and Scott Crawford of Arvada, CO. Dora Mae's love will live on through her grandchildren: Max (Kirsten) Whitmer of Monte Vista, CO; Brenna Whitmer of Twin Falls, ID; Griffin Whitmer of Monte Vista; and Dawson Crawford of Wheat Ridge, CO, as well as her two great-granddaughters, Paisley and Brynleigh Whitmer. She also leaves behind close friends, Peg, Leta, and Vada, who will carry her memory in their hearts.
In keeping with Dora Mae's wishes, cremation has been chosen. A memorial service will be held at the Center United Methodist Church, with details forthcoming. Her ashes will be scattered in her favorite camping spot alongside Eugene, continuing their journey together. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to a favorite charity or to Operation Smile, in care of the funeral home office.
As we remember Dora Mae Crawford, we celebrate her incredible spirit, love for family, and dedication to her community. She will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of all who knew her.
