Derek Guthals

Derek Aaron Guthals, age 54, of Monte Vista, Colorado, passed away on November 4, 2025.

Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Micheal Guthals and Mindy Vlaanderen, Derek graduated from Mound City High School and earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Missouri Western State University.

Derek was a man full of heart and passion for the environment; he spent years helping to protect and preserve wildlife in its natural habitat. He enjoyed the great outdoors through hiking and exploring. His passion for nature took him to Monte Vista, Colorado, in 2019, where he deeply appreciated the mountainous terrain and endless trails. While living in Colorado, Derek worked in his favorite setting: outdoors in the field of agriculture.

Derek is survived by his three children: Cody GGuthals Casey (Jake) Byrne, and Kayla Guthals; his stepmothers, Jacqueline Guthals and Carol Guthals; his sisters, Karla (Ed) Walters and April (Jacob) Vlaanderen Henry; his sstepsiblings Amy Stafford and David (Kim) Smith; and his lifelong friend, Richard Long. He was also a cherished grandfather to Watson Guthals and uncle to ten nieces and nephews.

Derek was preceded in death by his parents, Micheal Guthals and Mindy Vlaanderen, and his stepfather, Jim Vlaanderen.

Derek's life was filled with adventure and new beginnings, and his spirit will continue to live through his family, friends, and the great outdoors.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Missouri Department of Conservation.
