David "Dave" Ralph Scheel, a devoted son, father, grandfather, great grandfather and community servant, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026, just shy of his 86th birthday. Born on April 24, 1940, in Monte Vista, Dave lived his life with a steadfast commitment to family, service, and the beauty of nature.
A proud graduate of Sargent High School Class of 1958, Dave began his working years alongside his father in construction and later found himself in the Creede mines and working as ski patrol in the Wolf Creek Ski area. His courageous spirit led him to serve as a medic in the United States Army, defending the values he held dear. After his service, Dave returned to his roots in law enforcement as a Deputy Sheriff for Rio Grande County and Alamosa County. He dedicated 10 years as the elected Coroner for Rio Grande County and served as Chief Deputy Coroner from 2016 to 2022, earning the respect and admiration of his peers and community.
An early advocate of emergency medical services, Dave was among the first EMTs in the valley, teaching the inaugural EMT class in 1969. His dedication to helping others was evident in every aspect of his life, whether it was caring for the community or lending a hand to travelers in need, even assisting Tesla owners who found themselves halted by the challenges of Wolf Creek Pass.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Dave was a passionate sportsman and gun collector, with a special talent for polishing rocks into stunning pieces of jewelry. His love for nature extended to his cherished chickens, peacocks, and beloved cats, all of which highlighted his gentle spirit. Those who knew Dave will remember him as a man who spoke his mind but harbored a heart full of kindness.
Dave is survived by his children, Eric Scheel, Brandy Scheel, and Anna Norris; his grandchildren Lia Ravelo, Christopher Ravelo, Daniel Ravelo, Jacob Scheel, and Alexis Scheel; and his great-grandson Terrence Scheel. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Robert Scheel.
In honor of Dave's life and legacy, funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday April 22, 2026 at Mountain Valley Mortuary in Monte Vista, where family, friends, and community members are invited to gather to share memories and reflections. Interment will follow in the Monte Vista Cemetery. Contributions in his memory will be made to the American Cancer Society, an organization that aligns with the compassion he consistently showed throughout his life.
As we bid farewell to a kind and loving man, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to shine in the lives he touched and the hearts he warmed. David Ralph Scheel will be deeply missed, but his legacy of service and love will endure.
